Taxi Commission Bows Out; MTA Steps In

City's Transportation Agency Takes Over
Taxi Regulation

After 10 years of sometimes colorful, occasionally raucous and seemingly interminable meetings, frequently capped by controversial decision-making, the Taxi Commission held its final session Feb. 24. On March 1, its powers were transferred to the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (MTA), which also oversees Muni and Parking and Traffic.

The last meeting was largely ceremonial. Executive Director Jordanna Thigpen and President Paul Gillespie offered words of appreciation and certificates of commendation to persons from other city departments who had a hand in the commission's work. Drivers who had received compliments from the public were also commended. Five days later, the commission was no more. And so, an era in taxi regulation came to a close.
