At the Taxi Commission
The
Taxi Commission meets the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month at
6:30 p.m., in room 400 of City Hall. Special meetings may be scheduled
as needed. The following is a summary of significant commission proceedings
at recent meetings:
November 13
The commission discussed rules for criminal background checks for drivers
and medallion applicants.
November 27
The commission approved a resolution allowing newly-issued hybrid or
alternative-fuel medallions to be used in ramp taxis.
It held a public convenience and necessity (PC&N) hearing on the
need for more cabs and approved the issuance of 69 new alternative-fuel
or hybrid medallions.
It approved new procedures for criminal background checks for drivers
and medallion applicants.
December 11
The commission held its annual safety hearing as required by the Police
Code.
It approved a decision of a hearing officer finding that Regents Cab
had failed to provide workers compensation coverage for its drivers
as required by law.
January 8
The commission heard a presentation by Fred Egan of the Controller’s
Office on an economic impact report on the commission’s decision
to issue 69 new hybrid or alternative-fuel medallions. It adopted findings
supporting the issuance of the new medallions.
It discussed a clean-air taxi policy.
It revoked the color scheme, medallion and A-card of Alec Kaplan, Grasshopper
Taxi.
January 22
The commission approved a resolution on a clean-air taxi policy.
February 12
The commission revoked the medallion and A-card of Robert Michael Friedman
for violations of the Police Code.
It discussed amending the driving requirement for obtaining a medallion.
