Appeals Move Forward
The Board of Appeals
has agreed to hear UTW’s appeal of a Taxi Commission’s decision
approving a settlement between the commission and Veterans Cab over
Veterans’ 25 corporate medallions.
The agreement would require Veterans to surrender eight permits, but
would allow the company to gradually return the rest under a formula
linked to the death of its remaining shareholders. Under that formula,
Veterans would probably control most of the permits for many years to
come.
UTW contends all 25 permits are void and should have been reissued to
permit applicants years ago.
As of Jan. 1, National Cab took over management of the Veterans color
scheme from Speck Cab Co. Most of the non-corporate Veterans permits
have transferred to Arrow Cab.
The appeal will be heard March 15 in City Hall, Room 416. The meeting
begins at 5 p.m.
UTW has also appealed to the Court of Appeal a Superior Court decision
upholding the Taxi Commission over eight medallions formerly held by
deceased Yellow Cab shareholder Georgette Welch. The commission awarded
the permits to Welch’s children, Amy and Philip, who claimed they
should have been named on the permits when they were purchased in 1977.
UTW contends the commission unlawfully transferred the medallions to
the Welch children in violation of Proposition K of 1978. No date has
been set for a hearing on the appeal.
