Appeals Board Upholds
Decision to Add 50 Cabs
The Board of Appeals has upheld a decision of the Taxi Commission approving
the addition of 50 cabs to the fleet.
Twenty-five of the new cabs will be wheelchairaccessible ramp vans,
and 25 will be hybrid or alternative fuel vehicles.
Yellow Cab medallion holder Peter Witt took the appeal.
United Taxicab Workers also opposed adding cabs until other measures
to improve service, such as centralized dispatch, are implemented, and
the problem of limousines and other vehicles illegally providing taxi
service is dealt with.
In upholding the commission, the board toyed with the idea of approving
even more cabs than the commission authorized. But it backed off when
advised that changing the number would require more studies and delays.
Witt has filed a request with the Board for a rehearing. A hearing on
the request is scheduled for Aug. 29. In the meantime, issuance of the
new medallions has been stayed.
