D.A. Bringing Criminal Charges Against Limo Violators

At the request of Taxi Commission staff, District Attorney Kamala Harris has agreed to pursue criminal charges against some limousine operators acting illegally as taxis. Sgt. Ron Reynolds of the Taxi Detail says that several arrested limo drivers have recently been referred to the D.A.’s office for prosecution.
In the past, arrested limo drivers have been sent to traffic court, where they are subject to nominal fines, or to community conflict resolution boards. A criminal conviction could mean a much stiffer penalty, with a fine of up to $500 and six months in jail.
Lt. Jeanne Schlotz, the officer in charge of the Taxi Detail, and Sgt. Reynolds made four arrests of illegal operators at the Oct. 28 ’49ers football game. The lieutenant and sergeant have worked three recent games, facilitating taxi access to the park and keeping pirates out of the cab line. Forty-Niners’ management requested the help to attract more drivers to the stadium at game’s end.
At the Oct. 28 game against New Orleans, 174 cabs picked up passengers, up from 104 two games before. At one point, 150 people were waiting in the cab line. It took about two hours to clear the line.
