Luxor Switches Gears on
Leasing,
Imposes Credit Card Surcharge
Luxor Cab seems
to have abandoned its plan to go to long-term shift leasing. The announced
starting date of Sept. 1 came and went without a peep from management.
Maybe that’s because the same scheme has proven unsuccessful at
Yellow Cab. Relatively few drivers have signed the new Yellow leases,
which require payment of gates by the month in advance, plus a security
deposit.
Instead, Luxor has recently increased the number of medallions operating
under conventional long-term leases. As a result, some drivers have
lost shifts.
The company is reportedly surcharging drivers working for long-term
lease holders five percent on credit card charges. That’s a violation
of Police Code Section 1135(d), which reads:
“It shall be unlawful for any taxicab operator or taxicab dispatch
service to levy an administrative fee, service charge, processing fee,
or other surcharge on drivers of taxicabs for trips paid with scrip,
credit cards or other non-cash tender.”
Both Luxor and Yellow are still charging drivers an average gate of
$92.50 a shift, $1 more than the gate cap allows.
