Commission
Approves Settlement Of Veterans Permit Dispute
Remaining Corporate Medallions
Reportedly Moving to National
After years
of inaction, the Taxi Commission has approved a legal settlement of
a long-standing dispute over 25 corporate permits held by Veterans Cab
Co. (The corporation that controls the Veterans permits is distinct
from the company that runs the Veterans and Arrow color schemes, Speck
Cab Co.)
According to the settlement agreement, Veterans will surrender eight
permits on Jan. 2. The rest of the permits will be surrendered upon
the deaths of the seven remaining Veterans shareholders as follows:
one permit will be returned upon the first death of a shareholder, two
each upon the deaths of the next three shareholders, then three, four
and three permits will be returned respectively as the remaining shareholders
pass away.
Veterans drivers have expressed deep concerns over eight medallions
leaving the company at once. They fear for their jobs and their shifts.
Rumor also has it that the remaining 17 corporate permits will soon
be moving to National Cab, along with the company name and the telephone
number. One indication that there is truth to the rumor is the fact
that Speck Cab Company has been moving other Veterans medallions over
to Arrow, two and three at a time.
UTW opposed the settlement, arguing that all 25 permits are null and
void. UTW believes that any settlement should be along the lines of
previous deals with Yellow Cab and Luxor Cab. Those companies agreed
to surrender their corporate permits over three years, and all have
since been returned.
